Mustang Challange
New Mustang News
2/24/08 I am sorry for the delay in the notes. I needed a webpage update for more room
from my resident IT specialist. During the week of 2/11 we worked on a lot of ground
driving. On 2/14 a farrier hopped on and (after a lot of mutual stubborness) was able to ride
walk trot in two directions. Marli was disgruntled and fearfull for a few days afterword. So,
I gave him a couple of days off and did a lot more round pen work with a flag the week of
2/18.
2/25/08 Today I lunged, saddled, and ground drove Marli. He is starting to loosen up his
feet ground driving. He didn't even jump when the snow slid off of the arena roof.
3/2/08 This week we've been doing a lot of lunging and ground driving. I had a client take
up the reins and it was very interesting. Marli has bonded to me more than I realize. I can
drive him all over the arena but when Dave picked up the reins he just stood and looked at
Dave. Yesterday Marli participated in my Bombproofing clinic. Today I put the driving
harness on him. He was quiet and well behaved. He was a little goosey with the crupper
(under the tail) but who wouldn't be. I am just excited with any angle that we can make
progress with.
3/4/08 Marli met the farrier today. He was jittery to start with. Once he was tied (to a
large post) he settled in and did well.
3/14/08 Marli met the vet today. He was calm and (relatively) easy to check his teeth. He's
got great teeth. We did find out that he is 4 years old - NOT 3yrs. old. We have also been
working hard harnessing up and pulling things around the arena. He can pull a heavy tire and
(separately) a heavy wood ground pole. He definately works better with shorter, easier
sessions.
3/24/08 Check out www.madison.com/tct/news/stories/278262. It should be an article
about the Mustang Challange and the 3 trainers in Dane County. Other than news events
we've been trying to reinforce what he has learned and start beautifying.. I would really like
to start driving outside. But, it snowed again. And the outdoor arena and surrounding
pasture is all under ~1 foot of water.
4/6//08 Lately we have been working on getting used to the electric clippers, driving outside
and having the hose run on Marli's lower legs. He is pretty sure that this grooming this is for
the birds.
4/10/08 Yesterday we practiced trailer loading. I didn't make it easy for him. I used a
trailer with a ramp, only one door was open and the dividers were all closed. Even with the
small space, Marli came on in in ~5 minutes. We practiced getting on and off a couple more
times and called it good. He gets bored if there are too many repititons.
4/23/08 Marli did fantastic at Horse Fair. He got used to the crowds and things fairly
quickly. We did well at the in-hand portion. ~ 1/3 of the competitors scored lower than us.
He was quiet in his harness but didn't really want to be in the colliseum by himself. On
Sunday, he sold to a woman named Sara. He seemed very quiet and soft with her. I hope
they build a great partnership together. All in all I met a lot of really great people and had a
fun time.
